Watch Out for This Roofing Shortcut
When your home needs a new roof, make sure your roofer doesn’t take a key shortcut we see a lot of roofing contractors taking: leaving the roof’s old felt/underlayment on a roof and installing new felt and roofing materials over it. Instead, they need to remove ALL the old felt as pictured in the photo above.
Why is leaving the old felt on bad?
1) Money for the work to remove the old felt/underlayment is typically paid for as part of most insurance claims that require a new roof.
2) Shingle manufacturers require one new layer of felt, and you could be voiding your warranty if your contractor doesn’t install your roof per the manufacturer’s specs.
3) The old felt needs to be removed in order to inspect your home’s roof decking. There may be an issue with your roof deck, such as rotting wood, and any issues need to be found and fixed before the new roof is installed. It’s simply the right way to do it!
